Boomwhacher Team Building

You can play the Boomwhacker without any prior musical knowledge and quickly start enjoying making music with the rest of the group.

What is Boomwhacker?

A Boomwhacker is a percussion instrument. Each set contains plastic tubes of different colors, with each color representing a different musical tone. For example, the red tube corresponds to the tone “C,” the orange tube to “D,” the green tube to “G,” and so on. There are also tubes for semitones, representing sharp or flat notes, which come in different colors. Additionally, there is a tube cover called an “octavator,” which, when placed on the tube, lowers the tone by one octave.

A tone is produced by striking the tube against your hand or another surface, which is why this instrument is classified as a percussion instrument. However, since each tube has a specific pitch, the Boomwhacker can also be used as a melodic instrument.

Evolution and History of the Boomwhacker

Learning to play most musical instruments is typically a long-term process. On average, it takes about three years for a child or adult to reach a certain level of proficiency, whether they are enrolled in a music school or taking private lessons.

Choral singing is something that can yield quicker results, but to participate effectively, one usually needs a good ear for music and a sense of rhythm. These requirements often exclude many people from participating in choir singing.

Driven by the desire to create a way for people to quickly make high-quality music together—regardless of their musical background—Boomwhackers were born in America in 1995.

Boomwhackers were originally made from recycled materials, as recycling was popular in America at the time.

Craig Ramsell, an American resting at home after radiation therapy, was chopping up cardboard tubes for recycling and discovered that tubes of different lengths produced different tones when struck. Intrigued, he and his wife, Moni Ramsell, devoted an entire year to researching this phenomenon. They started with cardboard tubes, moved on to the tubes used for mailing letters, and finally, in 1995, created the plastic tubes we know today. Initially, Boomwhackers could produce tones up to two octaves. However, after further design improvements and the use of better plastic materials in 1999, the instrument evolved to produce tones across three and a half octaves, the version we still use today.

Discover Your creativity with Boomwhacker

This percussion instrument, a set of colorful tubes, can transform into a real band within a few hours!

With the guidance of our “conductor,” your team will learn to play different rhythms by following the notes,  and then compete to see who is better at listening, recognizing, and playing. Ultimately, they will learn to perform a popular tune together!

No musical background is required to play the Boomwhacker. The only person who needs musical training is the program leader, who will use a special methodology to guide your team effectively. By associating colors with sounds and using fun cues, your team will quickly learn how to play the notes projected on the screen, achieving harmonious group performance in no time.

In addition to playing, listening, and competing, part of the team-building experience involves splitting into smaller groups to create original melodies and lyrics. This segment is a favorite of ours (and often yours too!) because it brings out incredible creativity in people!

Your team will discover a new dimension of creativity, with some realizing they have more musical and artistic talent than they ever knew. Such discoveries always boost self-confidence, both individually and as a team.
